Alchemy Holds Off Blackhawk in Ocean Race PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 21 April 2009 14:34

The ocean race started with a very light northeasterly breeze and an ebb tide. Strangelove got pushed over early and painfully struggled to get back to the starting line as the rest of the fleet drifted out towards the bridge. Soon a nice 10-12 knot westerly filled in and the fleet tacked out by the headlands and into the fog. At the weather mark the first boats around the lightship were Mojo, Donkey Jack and Wonder. On the way back it was still ebbing so the big decision was to go North or South. This year the North paid as those who came in at Point Bonita and took advantage of the early flood ended up ahead. Alchemy sailed the hottest angle and got to the relief first followed closely by Blackhawk. Alchemy managed to hold them off and got the bullet.

The top five boats were Alchemy, Blackhawk, Wonder and Lulu; see full results.

Tuesday, 14 April 2009 12:56

The deadline for signing up for the May 2&3 Vallejo Race, without incurring a late fee, is Monday, April 20 at 5:00 PM.

The reasons you need to race in this 100+ year old, 300 boat regatta are:

  • It's a destination regatta which is one of the few we schedule.
  • The Vallejo Party rocks - The 11th Annual Fleet 1 Toast Off takes place in the area where we moor together! Win the Toast Off and become a member of the Toast Off Hall Of Fame. Who will dethrone the Donkey Jack Crew this year? Prizes are supplied by Sail California.
  • The Regatta promotes the J/105 fleet to all other owners and crews as a group of owners and crews that race fast and party together.

The SIs (Social Instructions) will be on http://www.sfj105.org next week. Join the fun. Sign up today!

Ocean Race NOR Posted PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 14 April 2009 12:39

The NOR is posted and online registration is open.  Entry fee is $50 with US Sailing discount.

Races are now governed by the 2009 OYRA prescriptions (http://www.yra.org/OYRA/docs/OYRA-2006-minequipment.pdf) that amend the ISAF Monohull Category 2 requirements.  A summary of the changes is below:

The races will be governed by the OYRA prescriptions, except as follows:

  • SR 3.14, Pulpits, stanchions, lifelines – attention is drawn to ISO 15085; class rules take precedence.
  • SR 3.27. Navigation lights; class rules take precedence;
  • SR 3.23.5 is amended to one permanently installed manual bilge pump
  • SR 3.24 is amended such that a deviation card is not required.
  • SR 4.08.4 is amended such that First Aid Certification is not required.
  • SR 4.17 is amended to require the Yacht’s name on the lifebuoy only.
  • SR 4.22.1 is amended to either SR 4.22.1(a) or SR 4.22.1(b) except that 4.22.1(a) shall include a whistle.
  • SR 5.01.2 A lifejacket meet the requirements of SI 1.2; however crotch or thigh straps are not required.

Please note the following:

  • SR 4.06 – Two anchors are needed. This is a new requirement. The regulations mandate that these be actual anchors, with 150 ft of rope. Sea anchors do not count. So please note that you will need to satisfy this.
  • SR 4.13 Echo Sounder or lead line. An ordinary digital depth sounder falls in this category, so if you have one you’re set.
  • SR 4.14 Speedometer or distance measuring instrument (log). I would assume every boat has a speedometer.
  • SR 4.15 Emergency steering. The standard emergency tiller suffices. However, we recommend you check to see if yours actually fits on the rudder post, since some apparently do not.
  • SR 4.18 Marine grade retro-reflective material. This refers to reflective taping on lifebuoys and life jackets. Please verify you have this.
  • SR 4.23.1 Pyrotechnic signals; Aboard you need 4 “red parachute flares”, 4 “red hand flares”, and “2 Orange smoke flares”. I don’t know if this corresponds to the exact list you had in the past, so please verify you have this.
  • SR 4.23.2(b) A watertight, high-powered white spotlight (searchlight) with spare batteries and bulbs. Some people may not have this so please check.
  • SR 5.05 requires each crew member have a knife. Some people may not have this so please check.
